Each time a prominent awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a clamor to include additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything that year
- Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games globally and have been for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
