The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Context of Sentencing

The former president was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the military leaders. Lula was took office without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers attacked and damaged public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.

The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.
